An astrologer’s prediction on me!

There is a practice among Keralite Hindus to write the “jaathakam” (horoscope)  of a child, as soon as its born. When I was born, my dad tried to do the same. But the astrologer told him that this girl might wont live after 12 yrs.Image (that was a bit nasty info, na?) . He told my dad “ If she is alive after her 12 th birthday, then, come to me, I will write her “jaathakam” then”.Image Now I wonder whether that was a nice thing to say to the father of a newborn child??? ImageI don’t know. Anyway the result was this, even at this 28 th age, my “jaathakam” remains unwrittenImage. My father is strictly against it being written. Yesterday I heard amma asking him, “Can we write her “jaathakam”, at least now?” But he said “No, never”. If you ask me, I also support him, whole-heartedly!

That astrologer told one more thing that I had born with bad luck to my dad.Image And that, till 12 yrs, I may have to spend most of the time in hospitals.Image I think that made dad a little paranoid. So every Sunday we had to go to our nearby Devi Temple, and do “poojas” against the ill-luck that I had brought with me to my dad(???).Image I don’t know how far its true, cos as far as I can remember, there wasn’t any ill-luck to my dad, after my birth.Image

But there was one true phase in this, entire “jathakam” thing. Till 12 yrs of age, I spent most of my time (and so, my dad’s time) in different hospitals. ImageTill I was 6, I had a very allergic stomach, which rejected milk in any forms, and made me friends with IV tubes! When I was 6 , I used  to have very wet and loud hollow coughs, which made my dad take me to Tuberculosis CenterImage. I remember my mom, praying hard, just before she was going to get the reports. Any way, I came clean, out of those reports.Image

Next thing that happened was when I was 8. I suddenly began to have severe and frequent attacks of Asthma. My mom and my achachan (mom’s dad) had Asthma. But only I had this, in the third generation. As Inhalers weren’t very common then (1980’s), asthma attacks made me think, I was going to die. I would say it’s the worst disease cos it causes suffocation to the patient as well as the onlookers.Image Then I realized uninterrupted breathing was a privilege. Again I was taken to hospital.  This time doc told me, I had to take an injection every alternate day for 3 months continuously. And do u know, how much I feared a syringe!!!Image (I was 8yrs then!)

I loved to play in the sun, swinging in coconut leaves, like Tarzan.Image As I couldn’t reach to get hold of the tip of coconut leaves from ground, I would put a stool, and then climb on it, get hold of the coconut leaf and then “whooooosh”---I would be on the other end!! WOW that was a great feeling!!!!Image It mad me really feel like “Tarzan”.Image And this would go on repeating! I would have done this, even now, if I could find a coconut leaf that can withstand my current body weight!Image LOL. I was strictly prevented from doing this, cos during those “Tarzan nights” I will have severe attacks of Asthma. But will an 8 yr old care? I still did my swinging, hiding away from mom…Image

But this alternate injection news made me seriously think about running away from home or to kill my doctor, at least.Image (Still I didn’t know how, to do that! LOL). My dad bribed me with comics, chocolates, (but, ice-cream was against Asthma!) on each single trip to Hospital. If Monday they pierced my left arm, on Wednesday they did it on my right arm, on Saturday it was my left arm again… after one month, the pain on my both arms became permanent. Soon my right arm began to swell. At first mom thot it was because of constant injection. But swelling increased so much and soon, I was back in my second home Image (Hospital, of course). Now I remember that day well, cos the doctor asked me and mom to go out, and told something to dad. Later dad came out and told something to mom, and she began to cry…I was busy watching the goldfish tank there!Image

Later I heard mom telling achachan that during my continuous injection series, once the injection, which was supposed to be had on muscle, was given to a vein, which made the vein infected, and which would have paralyzed my right hand. (a nurse’s fault!). I thot..WOW now that make me stop going thru this hell again (thanks to that nurse!Image). But soon a date was fixed for my operation and those docs tore open my swelled arm…?(how I hate them!!Image). After being discharged from hospital, I didn’t go to school for 1 month and my mom used to copy notes for me and read it to me…Image

Later my injections continued (this time, from another hospital). Some how Asthma never came back (till now) after that grueling 3 mths of alternate injection days…Image

Mysteriously I became perfectly healthy, after 13 yrs…I gained weight and none of my allergic stomach, old coughs, asthma, came again! Image Sometimes I think that the astrologer was right…may be that is why my father still wont go to astrologers…he says “Sometimes ignorance about future, makes present peaceful”.Image

  5. **Hugs** One of my nephews has asthma and he had a severe attack when I went to go see them (when they were younger). The problem was, we were out in the boondocks (meaning way out into the countryside, no phone, no neighbors, etc.) and his parents (my brother and his wife) had left me with the kids. I was worried, not knowing what to do, but his older brother assured me he was alright... He did have an inhaler with him and everything turned out alright, but it was still scary to deal with at the time.

  11. horoscope or horror-scope!??

For me i dont mind what's written for me. Just accepte everything and go with the flow. Even Lord shiva had his fate, same lord ram.

I am not going against horoscope. if its not in our hand why we need to fear about it;). God is there with us aloways. What fear.

Hindu storeis if you start compare, you will come into dialama.

Best solution is Go with the flow. Thats good for all solution.

see even for u it seems working after 13 yrs u havent catched up with those disease.meanwhile i have heard there are lot of very good astrologers in kerala :)

  16. u r 1 incredible person Swathi! I always cry when i read ur blogs.....

As far as horoscopes go...i think u r leading a second life after 12 years.... maybe god thought that u r much stronger than he thought u were... and gave u a life extension as a reward...

Astrology may be a science ....... but people who dicipher horoscopes surely are not scientists....

Three astrologers will give u 3 views as to how they see ur horoscope... I know coz i had a craze once...

Astrology is so complicated that a lay man will find it tough to understand it..... It is easy to predict a general occuring but tough to predict a specific event.... ANyway life would be so boring if u knew everything that was supposed to happen to you.... There would be no surprise... no struglle to overcome ur troubles ... nothing... that charm in our lives wud be missing... But if u cud foresee a tragedy and if u cud stop it from happening.... then astrology would be useful....

But consider this.... if u change ur future ..... wont this cause some kind of chain reaction and change other people's fate associated with u..... This cud cause harakiri in everyones horoscopes....

My mind is spiralling out of control..... i will stop.....

  17. one more thing....ur blog reminds me of Malgudi days.... Dont ask me why... i dont know

  18. Swathi,

U know. even i went to an astrologer/future reader in 1998 before we moved here in Romania, and 80% of wht she said came true, many ppl do not believe in this, but somehow i do, i donno if it is good or badbut even now i would like ot go back to Moldova so that that woman reads my future once again.

Ab ur life in hospital thru ur childhood, i must say my second home was also an hospital, i used to stay 1 week at home and 3 others in the hospital, i used to have horrible kidney chrisis/attack of pain.
I can understand ur frustration ab doctors and hospitals.:>

    With Love

  20. MADHOO---dear, i was never a strong girl...i never ca,e out thru my will power.Ignorance abt seriousness , made me laugh at..it was my parents who went thru hell, those times...

KISHOR---ha..ha..ha...u have a very strong sense of humor!

KRISHNA---astrology is a science full of mahematical calculations. i remember seeign a film "NUMBERS" where algebra seems to be the soluion to all the problems on earth.

JYOTHI---i neither stand against "jaathakam" or go with it..

LISA---**hugs**to u too. yea, asthama(w/o inhaler) gives u the feel of death thru suffocation. and even the ppl who see this, think they r witnessing a horrible and painful death.

RAGHUNADAN---ppl say u rememeber things of ur childhoos more clearly than ur recent past...may be thats the reason...

ANU---yea, asthma is very terrible. i was prevented form having anthing cold and even curd...asthma i think is a version of bronchitis. thanks dear, for ur support...

CHANDRA---astrology can be very accurate if the data u give is absolutely correct. but most of us give wrong time of birth (even minute variation in minutes and seconds can change the astrology results!!)

RAKHU---i didnt have bad time at all...a kid of 8, never thinks abt the diseases he/she has. i thot only abt how to entertain myself at that time. its my parents who worried and worried, all the time...NEVER me...

RAJESH---yea, i agree with you.i DO go with the flow...cos i am sure the final outcome is always the best...

PRADEEP---there are very famous astrologers in Kerala. astrology is a mixture of maths and science and it CAN provide amazing results...but i chose to be blissful with my ignorance abt future, cos i dont want to worry about my life....

PIYUSH---for me, as theres no horoscope, no coming across it...LOL....and thanks alot..

-XH---sometimes take life as it comes....at least u can be away from worries, until worries come to u..LOL

SWEET-KRISTINE---i believe in destiny...astrology just supports it, with the effects of planets on one's destiny (based on mathematics!).

ROSHAN---oh..dont cry pls...i made this blog look very funny....thru the eyes of an 8 yr old. for she, nothing matters, as long as she can play in the sun, eat ice-ceams, and swing like Tarza....abt Malgudi days I used to love Manjunath.(the child hero).

TANOO---u r rite, i hate hospitals to the utmost...i hate doctors.i will try NOT going there, as far as possible. i even hate the smell of lotion...for me it was lungs and for u it was kidney...o man these...organs...LOL (take it easy...)

JANU---dear,actaully i was very happy as a child. it never came into my mind that i had all these...kids NEVER know what disease they have...health never bothers kids u know..they will find one way or other to entertain themselves...so i never got bored...i was very happy, in my own world!

  23. jathakam - i call it horror-scope.

There is a 'cholu' or pazha-mozhi in tamil, which i always use, when people talk about jathakam or horrorscope.
'Vidhiye, madhiyal vellalam' - You can overcome your fate, by your actions.

jathakam - No i dont believe it is fake or there no truth to it. But i dont believe that any mortal alive today, knows it well enough to explain it right.
So now do i believe this 'jothisiyar' or the one above him. I rather trust in the one who is 'deep blue' and worry about his influence on me, rather than that of saturn, jupiter or moon. Like he said in the Gita:
    karmaNyevaadhikaaraste maa phaleshu kadaachana |
    maa karmaphalaheturbhuu maatesaNgotsvakarmaNi ||

More than anything, i think you are real lucky to have such parents who supported your every step till you were 13 (unlucky 13 !!). In India it is so easy to fall prey to these kind of talk, specially with all the ammaman and ammayi, ammoomas and muthachans constantly warning, advising and reminding them of this. Kudos to them and you.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Swathi, Yeah it is a pure maths and science. Your Jathagam depends on how accurate is your birthtime. I wouldn't go against this and at the same time we should not too dependent on this as well. Take it as a guide. Your destiny is already fixed.........

  27. swathi i have something to say about astrology,
there is a lot of difference between "this will happen" and "this may happen". astro just predicts the future that "this may happen".
It is abranch of science like any other science meant 4 the compfort of humans.
It helps us in warning before something really happens, so that we will be cautious and though we cant avoid the trouble, atleast we can try to reduce the risk caused by it. it acts like sesmo be4 earth quake, and it is in our hands to protect our selves, and some times, with great passion and strong determination a man can defy his destiny too.

ignorance is bliss...as ur dad said, may be good 4 some cases.
    ok dear..nice topic ...

    ReplyDelete
  28. It depends on who writes teh jathakam. Some astrologers are fake and write all sort of crap. As for my jathakam, till now, whatever happened is sort of similar to what is written. I dont depend on it though. No one in my house cared to read it after the day it was brought home. Thats the funny part. LOL

    ReplyDelete
  29. CHANAKYA---isnt it feels good to hear about good things in life??

PRAVEEN---oh...so u r a future king?? hail the king! LOL

CK---oh! yea, they did risk with me (especially i was a single kid). what if i was dead???

MADDY---i know, m destiny (like others) is alredy fixed...all r in the path towards it!

    JYOTHI---yea....?

TANVI---bad days and good days are never over...they just take turns...LOL!

NEERAJA---i think for my Dad, ignorance is a bliss...but its not like that for all !!!

ASWATHY---ur mom told me abt ur jaathakam, which actually provoked me to write this, blog...

    ReplyDelete
  30. Yeah... she might have told... because whatever was written was happened the same way especially my career path and stuff.... But the problem is that, what is written for my mariage is not happening the way it should be, thats one worry, my mom is having... HA HA HA!

  31. Hey i m a bit late here. this blog entry of urs reminded me a dialogue from Mani ratnam sir's movie "Geethanjali" ..it goes like this
"Naaku Eeroje Mukhyam Repati gurinchi naaku bengaledu" ....the best i cud translate into english....
"Today is wat matters to Me..I dont worry abt Tomorrow" that shud be the way i guess.... secret of happines...take life day by day. :)
Nice blog swathi ...its my first time into ur world.

  33. 'Astrology' in the title dragged me in here (coz I'm a astro enthusiast and my hobby is vedic astrology proper!)....and am not disappointed! U really write great...gottu tell u!

Astrology is a science...just as any other science it has shortcomings too. Just because a doctor fails to cure someoen, the medical science doesn't cease to be a science.

"Jata kam?"= "what for the birth?" in sanskrit....so it is!But above all is God's grace which I believe showered over u....teh initial 12yrs must've been a really bad phase...now, lets hope u enjoy life to the greatest!

  34. Even Am suffering because of one!my mom dont know the exactime time of my birth and she went to astrolgr to write my Jathakam with an approx time information. He made it for me.but here I have raja yogam all.Good know? But I fell in love with a girl but now comes the after effect, jathakam wont match! So i changed my birth time from 12:30am to 12:31am now evrything is alright.

Swats I want to tell you that very clearly this man does NOT know any damn thing about astrology! Just tank God, he didn't write ur jaatakam!

There's no such thing at all. The Milestone is an INDICATION of the distance...not the CAUSE of it! Half baked 'astrologers' cause untold problems in our society.
