Temptations...

When you know you can’t get it, or it’s impossible to get it, then you feel like having it badly…..really very badly… this phenomenon is there for everything, especially when it comes to the matter with foods. If your doctor prevents you from eating it, then you need it…that means you MUST and SHOULD have it! I have noticed this tendency in my mom,…and now in myself , *winks*.

This time it’s not any doctor or something. This is about the food you get here. First of all I don’t like to eat what I cook. No. It’s not because it’s that bad. [FYI, its OK!! There are living specimens who have tried my food!]. It’s because I am the sole witness in all its phases, that once it becomes edible, I don’t want it, anymore. There’s no excitement left in having it. So I make lunch (biriyani/ rice &curry/fried rice etc) and pack it for my husband. And at lunch time, I eat from the restaurant here. Typical Irish food, mostly, grilled lamb/beef/pork with sauce and mashed /baby potatoes and steamed veggies. My husband doesn’t like it, but I love it mainly because somebody is preparing it for me and I have the excitement of eating it, by NOT witnessing the process behind it! Wow! That’s what I call the pleasure of eating!

Evening, as usual I cook dinner and my hubby eats it. And what’s for me?? On our way back home, when the car reaches the Chinese/Thai take-away “Weng Garden”, I look hopefully at my hubby’s face, and yeaa….. I get one pack from there!!!! My mom says this is a horrible habit, especially from a woman/wife, who is supposed to manage house hold [oh! By the way, she meant me!]. But I defend myself “I cook…for him, but I want some one to cook for me” ***she thinks it’s totally weird***. When I told my colleague, that I cook and pack lunch for my hubby and eat myself from the restaurant she gave me this “you-have-got-some-serious-problem” look!! Does anyone understand my need to be fed other than by myself?? NO…no one..…

Now there is happy news for me. They have opened an Indian take-away near our office..aaahhh…. its heaven!! I get all kebabs, and tikkas and tandooris and naans…wow!!!

Here there are some 2-3 Indian restaurants, but they use a lot of cooking sauce in dishes, instead of Indian spices, that it turns out to be a kind of Indo-Irish dishes, rather than “Indian” or “Irish”. So we avoid them! Why create a bad name to Indian/Irish dishes? It’s better to try Irish dishes or Chinese o Thai rather than trying a mixture of Irish and Indian. But this new place seems to be good…I loved the naan… and the price is also reasonable…comes under 5€.

Even today, I have lamb fried rice at home, but I am eating chicken tikka and naaan, from that take-away…

My mom will kill me, if she sees this…but after all when you badly need it, you MUST have it…

  6. Lol..True ..when we are restricted from having something that will be thing which we need most..and thats the reason i dont diet...hehe..because when am prevented from having something , tendency to have it is more and i endup eating that more..so no diet..better stick to what u have usually and reduce the quantity...

I agree that when someone else cooks we feel that its having a special taste..Its not that i dont like the food i cook , but its more tasty when amma cooks for me....

  12. Ha ha!! I have heard this from so many people. Don't worry Swathi, its a common syndrome. Do you know the people who make sadya and cater for all the weddings and stuff?? Once we had them over at our place preparing lunch for the reception for my sis' wedding party. THEY wanted my mother to cook something for their lunch!! 'Enthengilum mathi rasam, morukari or anything' they said. They wanted to eat something that someone else prepares coz they cook daily.
For us who cook, we like to have food prepared by others once in a while. Atleast in my case its once in a while only. I enjoy what I have made. no probs for me. Nut when I feel like having outside food, my family better oblige me!!*wink* lol!!

You know this daily outside food is not going to do you good healthwise though!!

  13. 'But' not 'Nut'!!!!!!!

  14. Since my parents are away for two weeks, I am cooking my own food. Even though my cooking is not that bad, but still I dont have a good appetite for it. I am still trying to find a reason for it.

By the way, I would adivice you not to eat too much non-veg food! :)

  15. *rolling eyes* one of these days I'm going to say exactly this! but right now..mom's cooking for me. wooo hooo!!! :)

  16. You wont believe this Swathi - when I go home (which is once in 2/3 months) for 2 or 3 days, I cook at least one meal, all by mself!

The kids enjoy watching me do this, and once when my son was very small, he actually asked me, "Achha, innu achanano amma?"

    __
    mmm! another blog idea! lol...

  17. Let me try a new trick *evil grin*.
Imagine a vazha ila with pure white ponni Rice, steaming hot. A Few drops of Ghee, a spoon ful of Parippu. Then Hmmm aromatic Sambar. On the sides are, Kalan, Olan, Cabbage Thoran, Vazhakka elissery, Multi vegetable Aviyal, Ishtew, Masala curry, Koottu Curry, Pachadi, Inji curry, Tender mango pickles, Pappadam, the Rice with A heady Rasam, then Gothambu Payasam, Ada Pradhaman, then Pazham Payasam. Then a little rice with ripe Mango Pulisshery, a Bit of Thayir, and a glass full of Butter milk.

Think of all these or atleast a few of these the next time you eat griled beef and lamb and all those innocent dead creatures...lol. Can anything beat a grand sadya?

    Vinod

  18. LOL @ "Achha, innu achanano amma?"

    ReplyDelete
  19. VINOD: this is Ireland...here you can see sadya (and its ingredients) only in DREAMS... i used to be a vegetarian(didnt even eat eggs) till I came here...now, cherayude nattil chennaall.....thats my policy....jeevikkanam, ie the first prioroty, rest all comes next...survival, is the first thing!

  20. LOL, this is not really wierd swathi. I understand the difference between cooking for someone else and eating your own self cooked food. My mom also says this a lot many times and thats when I take over :D and they enjoy my cooking!!! And about eating out, I just love it, but mom-cooked food is the best for me, anyday!!

    ReplyDelete
  21. I hate cooking for myself, and yes, I do understand how you feel about wanting food that you haven't prepared. It does not even taste as good. I love cooking, especially if I have a lot of people to eat it and appreciate it! I love cooking for my husband, and I will eat the food I cook, but if we go out to eat I enjoy it so much more! Have a great day! Quit feeling guilty for eating out instead of eating your own cooking! LOL HUGS

    ReplyDelete
  22. Hmm true Swathi.. Survival come first!!! But then you can try and make each of them yourself. Its not something that comes only in dreams. Its all within you Swati. These dishes are the ones you grew up with. So make them one by one. Good luck!!!

  23. He ha ha ha... Ho HO HO... enikku vayya,... appol this is the secret of Gelucil stock in ur house... paavam ur hubby... sthiram vayarinu problem thanne???

Well this is a common phenomenon... but for me it is just that i love to eat crusines cooked by me after some half an hour of cooking... just cant have it right after coming out of the kitchen... and i love to cook... but my dad is the best cook (be it traditional, arabic, continental.. but chinese i score).. so my policy is to wait and watch.. If dad in the kitchen then wait patiently for the food to be ready (serving and preparing the table is my job)... else enter the kitchen and make something for myself and dad... if both of us are lazy then i go out and get something from any one of the restaurants in sharjah.... if in thiruvananthapuram kitchen is my mom's domain... and if dad is also there then they will get together to prepare the best food... mmmm...(vayiloode titanic odunnu)...

    ReplyDelete
  24. BUt when i am in thiruvananthapuram... I also prefer to dine in some of the restaurants..(AZAD, Buraq, Akash, Salwa Dine, Annapoorna, Arul Jyothi and Buhari are my favs...

But Swathi a piece of advice... Too much of outside food is not a healthy practice... and that too Chinese its carcinogenioc as they contain Ajnomoto... So 'Adhikamayal amruthum visham'....

    ReplyDelete
  25. ANOOJ: i know ajinomoto aka MSG, from cancer to whatever...ariyaaam...elllaam ariyaaam....

thinaaalum marikkum thinnilllelum marikkum, ennal pinne thinnittu marichooode???
(even if we eat or if we dont eat, we will die one day..then why cant we eat and then die???)

  27. So I make lunch (biriyani/ rice &curry/fried rice etc) and pack it for my husband." Tell me who makes Biriyani for lunch for her husband and you are telling us you are a bad cook. Mom is worried because of bad food cooked outside, but in Ireland I don't think that will be the case. Have fun. Cheers.

Swathi Ji..enda paraya.. you made me think stuff which usually I woudn't think. Generally in most of the cases people do have the excitement to eat the food they cooked with so much effort..but in your case its soo different. Hehehe...your friend thinks u have a serious problem...neah...your just a bit different.."and be proud that you are different"- BLACK. :)

  33. I love food!! I too am very trepid about trying fusion food... It can either taste heavenly but mostly it gives a bad name to both the cuisines...

And thankfully here we have a bit of Indian take outs at the grocery stores itself, so we make sure to eat samosa, chhole bhature while we do our grocery shopping ;)

And I agree with ya that no matter how yummy food we cook, it is another thing to eat food cooked by someone else...

Athu you philosophy, you are entitled to it. But a woman who intends to be a mother in the future owes it to take care of her body and be healthy...and try to eat as healthily as possible. Your body is not your own Swathi...it has to be home for a new life in the future. You care for your house, your dress, your surroundings, your car..even save money for the future. But most important is caring for your health....coz that is what is going to affect someone else first!! Of course, no one teaches us that in our life. It must come from us!!

  43. Seems to me that my wife of 35 years has spent a huge part of her life preparing delicious meals for me and our three sons, now 28, 22, and 18. Now, in addition, she fixes many meals for our only grandson who is 19-months old. Baby Jimi spends lots of time with us since his Mom passed away two days after he was born.

I am guessing that many women are like my wife Chris, cooking long hours everyday as a labor of love and as a duty that they feel compelled to carry out. Thus, I think that it only makes sense that women should have food made for them whenever possible by others--professional or family members.

Now in retirement, I try to do dishes all the time, but dishes are nothing in effort compared to cooking everyday. Just the sheer mental energy of having to always plan meals and of having to often times answer the question of "what is for supper?" when lunch is barely over must be overwhelming for many women.

I even bought a crockpot with some money I received as a retirement present two years ago. I think very few things are as rewarding to a woman, who works outside and inside the home, as having a meal ready upon arriving home. I know my wife appreciates it. And a crockpot seems like a good way to have something wonderful to eat without the tired woman having to prepare it. BTW, since retirement, she has been teaching little bits about cooking and I find it interesting. My only special cooking all these years has been pineapple pies.

You have made excellent points in this blog that we men would be wise to understand and to apply.
    Good job.

    ReplyDelete
  44. BOB: u seems to have understood the mental process of cooking women completely....
its exactly the planning....like thinking even at office, when ur hands are on keyboard and u will be thinking what to cook for dinner and if all veggies and meat are there in fridge..
also when we come back home after work, even i will be hungry like hell... but i have to cook, sometimes even w/o sitting, cos its will be very late, then....
yea, but nothing macthes the satisfaction of seeing ones hardwork' s result being savoured so heartily!!!
