Based on shops' names...

Here the shops are named after people, mostly. Eg: the one in which I spent most of the time in Ireland ..Penny’s.. Or Claire’s or Siobhan’s or Pat O’ Connors’ or Linda’s or even pubs named as Dan’s Tavern or so. But it’s so different from our local shops in India. There we had all the possible names. From the nameless shops in junctions, which are locally known as the ‘shop of ’ to those numerous <ABC> Stores, where ABC can be replaced with virtually anything.

There most local textile shops where ‘Textiles’ and most local hotels will be ‘ Hotel or ‘ Restaurant and most tailoring shops will be ‘ Tailors and every pharmacy will be Medical Stores.

When I was 3 or 4 yrs old, my dad had my clothes done in ‘Happy Tailors’. He cut my hair in ‘New Hair Dressing Saloon’ though it was a very old shop, in which he used to cut his hair when he was a boy! And my mom shopped for my clothes ONLY in

Good Morning Stores’. It didn’t get to me how funny the names sounded, till I went to school.

My friends asked: “swathi, from where did you buy this from?”

“Good Morning Stores”

***giggles giggles and more giggles ***

How funny is that?

I was made fun of for virtually every shop I / my parents went. And that too even by my grown-up neighbors. And that was not even for my choice.

Finally, getting desperate, I told mom,

“Could you please take me to a shop with some good name? All my friends are making fun of me, for ‘Happy Tailors’ and ‘Good Morning Stores’ “. I want to tell them that I bought something from a shop with a respectable name.

May be that was when she realized for the first time, the complexity and variety of problems a 6 yr old can face!

But she didn’t take me to any shop with fancy names. Because obviously she was saving money.

Now when I look back, I still don’t understand why they made fun of me (and NOT my parents), for not going to fancy shops. Here I go to “Mary’s Discount Stores”, or “€2 Shop”(where everything is 2 €) to save money. But still, I am not being made fun of. At least openly!

May be my kids will be made fun of for MY 2€ Shop visits?

May be kids are evaluated by the choices their parents make , hmm… even on the basis of the kind of shops they visit?

  4. A unique and refreshing post from apna very own Swathi!! 'Good Morning Store' where you can find everything!! You should see the rush there even now!!
You ask if kids make fun of other kids for the choices their parents made. I feel the kids who make fun are reflecting THEIR parents' attitude. Probably in their homes, the elders looked down on people, on basis of such things!! Poor silly misguided people!!

  6. How interesting... I remember a Kharana Bakery, a Pappu toy house, a Burma Bakery, Cheap house, from my childhood days...

Well I am sure if those kids have had a decent upbringing they wouldn't have made fun of you... Like Shail said above they are a reflection of their parents attitude and parenting style... And knowing you, your kids will be well mannered and sensible for sure...

  12. Hi Swathi , good blog.

Even in Dubai most of the shops even the big departmental stores are named with some person's name or sir name. Like very famous Lulu Departmental Store, Choitrams, Madhoor etc etc...

  14. That reminded me of "variety stores" where I went with Dad for stationary when I was a kid...
and for clothes, I used to go to "Karni stores",

when I gerw up, I used to pick my card and other stationary from "Nakoda novelties"....

Thinking on that, it really give me giggles now. (ALl are in my hometown, Bongaigaon)...

  16. after reading the blog and the comments.. i guess there a quite a few of such stores everywhere.
i think the kids just want to poke fun at one another... may not be with malice.
but it can be irritating sometimes.
and for a kid, these things are important. 'cause you dont know enough to explain things away.

  17. Good Morning Swathi,

Very interesting post in which you make very good points. I think that many kids, unfortunately, are made fun of when they don't have the "cool brands," (or equivalents in their cultures)--in America, the "Michael Jordan" shoes (what is more ridiculous than $150-$250 for a pair of basketball shoes?), the GAP clothes, ECKO clothes with the "Rhino" symbol-- see a short entry re "ECKO" fashions at , the Tony Hawk skateboard apparel and gear.

Truth is we can't get such things at the more economical stores like Walmart. So when kids get the Walmart goods, unfortunately, some other kids make fun of them because they aren't "cool."

Parents buy what they can afford or what they think that they can afford to put on a "credit" card. Sometimes, they buy to bribe the child into better behavior or to atone for their parental "mistakes."

Of course the definition of "cool" is always changing so it is expensive to keep up the cool styles.

What it boils down to I think is possessions still, as they have been through all time, are symbols of status and a person's individuality. God help the kid who has to wear "regular" tennis shoes or whose pants lack "saggability" or "hip-huggedness."

We all have experienced the urge to be cool as youngsters. In my young days, it was white shoes, or shoes with metal taps so as to make cool clicking tap sounds as I walked along, wearing pants low, smoking, driving fast and reckless, and hair slicked back.

And nowadays guys wear baggy pants about to fall off, girls wear hip-huggers revealing previously unobserved anatomy (midriff proportions reveal all amounts of girth) and hair, facial markings, and various "piercings" designed for attracting the startled, sudden attention of others.

As the child matures into the young adult and full adult, hopefully they see that it is their human potential, individuality, heart, mind, values, and ways of caring for others and the world that makes them unique, not Air Jordan shoes or see through blouses with black bras.

    Hopefully.

    Thanks for sharing.

  18. BOB,
    thanks alot for that reply...
i took more than 5 minutes to read it again and again...
what u ahve told is abslty right!

and i see all these things over here too (in Ireland)..
i think for India, yea, we have started copying the west youth!!

loved these...which are nothing but 100%truth!
    >>baggy pants about to fall off,
    >>"saggability" or "hip-huggedness."
    >>(midriff proportions reveal all amounts of girth)
    >>various "piercings" designed for attracting the startled, sudden attention of others.

    and to add...
    emerald green shining eye shadows...
dark violet lip colors...with tongue piercings..
once i got scared seeing a teen girl, eye to eye..with those...i almost screamed!!!

thanks alot for that valuable comment!

  19. A couple days ago my wife who works at a school for 5 year olds (about 450 of them) saw one of the mothers of a student come in. THough she was pregnant, she had the low-riding pants and the blouse above her belly. Ah, sweet keeping up with fashion. :D
